Russell Young (1959) was born in Northern England and began his artistic career studying photography, film and graphic art at the Chester Art College. He was taken on as an assistant for Australian photographer Christos Raftopoulos, while, at the same time, photographing the early live club shows in the late 1970s. With the gained exposure from photographing artists like Bauhaus, R.E.M. and the Smiths, he moved into shooting for magazines. However, he kept close contact with the music industry photographing album covers for Morrissey, Bjork, Springsteen, and Dylan among others. Eventually, his hectic lifestyle as an editorial photographer was not enough to fulfill his creative aspirations, Young pursued painting and transitioned into a full-time career as a fine artist.

As a painter, Russell Young is known for his portraits of iconic figures, he began the series called 'Pig Portraits'. Young acquired the mugshots of musicians, actors, and political figures and he blew them up as bold, colorful, silkscreen, portraits with which he had his first solo exhibition in Los Angeles in 2003. His recent work consists of combining painting and photography to achieve stunning results, including his unique and frequent use of diamond dust, individually applied and pressed into the surface of his works, creating a mesmerizing effect that makes each piece unique. Russell Young currently lives and works between California and Brooklyn. Having been featured in galleries worldwide. Noteworthy collections include Barack Obama, Brad Pitt, David Bowie, Aby Rosen, and more, Russell Young is one of the most desired, sought-after working artists of today.
